Outgoing Uruguay coach Marcelo Bielsa has his say — for 100 minutes

Marcelo Bielsa, who exited as head coach of the Uruguayan national team after the side bowed out of the World Cup in the group stage, gave a 100-minute press conference on Tuesday in which he maintained that his message never resonated with the team.

Uruguay opened play in Group H with a 1-1 draw against Saudi Arabia, then squandered a second-half lead in a 2-2 draw against Cape Verde. Needing a positive result against powerhouse Spain in the group finale to advance, Uruguay lost 1-0 on a goalkeeping error.

Speaking Tuesday in Montevideo of his tenure on the job, which began in May 2023, Bielsa said, “What I have absolute certainty of is that nobody cares what I know. I know when someone cares what I know. Nothing I tried to transmit was important, at any level. That was never important from my point of view. I don’t see anything bad in it — other people aren’t interested in learning what I know. Case closed.”

Bielsa added, “My responsibility for what happened is very clear. I cannot justify the position we finished in. In short, my management of the players I had was insufficient. We did our best, both my colleagues and I, and the players, and it wasn’t enough. I am convinced that if I had chosen a different path, we wouldn’t have changed the results we obtained.”

Despite his assessment of how his approach was received, Bielsa still believes his side deserved better results.

“There’s not a serious, thoughtful, meditated and explained analysis which doesn’t see us winning against Saudi Arabia, which doesn’t see us winning against Cape Verde and which doesn’t see us drawing with Spain,” he said, adding, “We were sufficiently united as to run 20% more than Saudi Arabia, 30% more than Cape Verde and 25% more than Spain.”

Bielsa also backed goalie Fernando Muslera, who asked to exit the Spain match at halftime after his 42nd-minute mistake led to a goal. The change was made, but Uruguay failed to rally.

According to Bielsa, Muslera was sick the day before the match.

“It’s never happened to me that a player asked to be replaced because of the effect of errors he committed on his spirit,” Bielsa said. “Muslera told me he was so stricken by the error he committed that he preferred to stop playing because the group’s possibilities were intact and he wasn’t in the best condition to face up to that second half, when we had everything to achieve.”

Vancouver Whitecaps midfielder Kenji Cabrera will miss an extended stretch after undergoing surgery Monday to repair a fifth metatarsal fracture in his right foot.

The club said Cabrera is expected to fully recover in four to six months, which could affect the rest of his MLS season depending on how quickly he recovers. A four-month recovery might allow him to return late in the campaign, but a longer timeframe could push his comeback past the season’s end.

Cabrera has played in 13 matches (five starts) in 2026, compiling one goal and three assists in all competitions. Since joining Vancouver from Peru’s FBC Melgar in July 2025, the 23-year-old has appeared in 26 matches (seven starts), producing three goals and three assists.

The injury removes another attacking option from a Whitecaps side already trying to manage its roster through the middle of the season. Cabrera has also been part of Peru’s senior national team picture this year, earning three call-ups in 2026, including for two June friendlies.

Vancouver (10-2-2, 32 points) sits in first place in MLS’ Western Conference. The Whitecaps return from the league’s extended World Cup break for a July 16 road match against the Chicago Fire.

Colson Montgomery and Junior Perez homered during Chicago’s seven-run third inning as the visiting White Sox beat the Baltimore Orioles 9-3 on Tuesday night.

Jacob Gonzalez had three hits and drove in three runs and Andrew Benintendi provided three hits. Tristan Peters added two hits and scored twice as Chicago won for the sixth time in its last eight games.

By winning on back-to-back nights, the White Sox will win a series against Baltimore for the first time since July 2021 regardless of the result of Wednesday afternoon’s series finale.

Erick Fedde (3-6) picked up the victory, going five innings and yielding three runs on five hits, striking out and walking three apiece.

Tyler Schweitzer pitched the final four innings for the rookie’s first career save, striking out three without a walk and allowing four hits.

Gunnar Henderson had two hits and scored two runs and Blaze Alexander and Samuel Basallo each notched two hits for the Orioles, whose losing streak grew to four games. They have lost six of their last seven games.

Orioles starter Trey Gibson (1-3) was dinged for eight runs on seven hits and six walks in 2 2/3 innings. He struck out five.

The White Sox scored on Benintendi’s first-inning double to open the scoring. The Orioles countered in the bottom of the inning on Basallo’s run-scoring single.

Chicago was back on top on Montgomery’s two-run homer, which also drove in Benintendi, in the third. The White Sox kept going, with Gonzalez driving in two runs with a single before Perez’s three-run shot.

Gonzalez, who had his second three-RBI game in as many nights, doubled in a fourth-inning run with two outs.

Dylan Beavers’s RBI double and Pete Alonso’s RBI single drove in Baltimore runs in the fifth.

The White Sox finished with 11 hits, though they didn’t score after the fourth inning. Chicago batters struck out 13 times.

Cristopher Sanchez worked seven strong innings while guiding the Philadelphia Phillies to an 8-0 win over the visiting Pittsburgh Pirates on Tuesday.

Sanchez (10-3) allowed just three hits and two walks, striking out nine, as he became the first starting pitcher to reach 10 wins this season. He has pitched 16 scoreless innings in two dominant starts against the Pirates this year.

Justin Crawford had three hits and three RBIs for Philadelphia, while Trea Turner added a homer, a double and three RBIs on his 33rd birthday.

Esmerlyn Valdez’s four-game homer streak came to an end, although the Pittsburgh rookie still went 2-for-3 with a walk. Bubba Chandler (3-8) yielded five runs and seven hits in 6 1/3 innings. He struck out six and walked two.

Sanchez fanned five of the first six batters he faced, setting the stage for his teammates to score two runs in the bottom of the second.

Alec Bohm singled with one out. After a groundout, Chandler hit J.T. Realmuto with a pitch and allowed a single to Gabriel Rincones Jr. to load the bases. Crawford then fouled off five pitches before sending a two-run single into left field.

Sanchez allowed a leadoff walk in both the third and fourth innings but limited the damage each time. In the fifth, the lefty gave up a one-out double to Billy Cook before retiring the next two batters.

In the sixth, Sanchez allowed just a leadoff single to Valdez. Sanchez then worked a 1-2-3 seventh before ending his night after 92 pitches.

Philadelphia plated three insurance runs in the seventh against Chandler and reliever Isaac Mattson.

Rincones drew a leadoff walk before Turner’s RBI double made it 3-0. Kyle Schwarber followed with a hit to put runners on the corners.

Pittsburgh then summoned Mattson, who gave up an RBI single to Bryce Harper as the hosts went ahead 4-0. A fielder’s-choice grounder from Brandon Marsh plated another run.

Phillies reliever Jonathan Bowlan allowed a walk and a single in the eighth but struck out the other three batters he faced.

Turner’s opposite-field, two-run homer highlighted a three-run eighth for Philadelphia against Brandan Bidois.

Lou Trivino worked around a single in the ninth to seal the Phillies’ 10th shutout win of the season. Philadelphia earned its eighth win in the past 11 games, while Pittsburgh had a two-game winning streak snapped.

The teams have split the first two contests of a four-game series.
