Dustin May silences Mets as Cards push winning streak to 5

Mandatory Credit: Vincent Carchietta-Imagn Images Dustin May pitched six stellar innings for his first win in nearly two months and Alec Burleson hit a two-run homer as the visiting St. Louis Cardinals extended their winning streak to five games with a 7-0 victory over the New York Mets on Tuesday night.
May (4-6) earned his first win since April 21 by scattering four hits. After going 0-4 with a 3.86 ERA in his previous seven starts, May struck out six and walked one.
Rookie JJ Wetherholt hit a two-run single and Jordan Walker rapped an RBI double to highlight a four-run third inning off New York starter Freddy Peralta (4-5). Lars Nootbaar added an RBI groundout to cap the big inning for the Cardinals, who also ended a five-game road losing streak to the Mets.
Ivan Herrera reached base five times, including three hits, and scored three times.
Herrera was hit by Peralta in his first two plate appearances. After the second one, he scored on Walker’s double to left for a 3-0 lead in the third.
In the fifth, Herrera singled and scored when Burleson sent a 2-1 curveball into the left field seats. In the seventh, Herrera poked a leadoff double before trotting home on Burleson’s double off Joey Gerber.
Before the Cardinals scored four times, May stranded rookie A.J. Ewing at third by striking out Marcus Semien and Brett Baty. He also retired rookie Carson Benge on a double play to end the third and was aided by center fielder Nathan Church crashing into the fence to rob Semien of a two-run double to end the fourth.
Church had three hits, including a double in the third and made his key defensive play after missing the past 15 games with a strained left shoulder.
Justin Bruihl followed May with two innings and Matt Svanson completed the Cardinals’ third shutout with a 1-2-3 ninth.
After winning seven of their previous 10, the Mets were blanked for the seventh time this season and second time against the Cardinals.
Peralta allowed a season-worst six runs on six hits in six innings. The right-hander struck out five and walked two.

Olivia Miles outduels Azzi Fudd as Lynx run past Wings

Mandatory Credit: Matt Blewett-Imagn Images Olivia Miles scored 24 points, grabbed seven rebounds and dished six assists, and the Minnesota Lynx cruised to a 100-76 win over the Dallas Wings in a Commissioner’s Cup matchup on Tuesday night in Minneapolis.
Kayla McBride finished with 22 points for Minnesota (10-2), which won its eighth game in a row and improved to 4-0 in Commissioner’s Cup play. Natasha Howard scored 21 points on 8-for-10 shooting, and Courtney Williams finished with 16 points and eight rebounds.
Paige Bueckers scored 23 points on 9-for-16 shooting to lead Dallas (7-4), which dropped to 2-1 during the in-season tourney. Arike Ogunbowale scored 16 points and added six assists, and former Lynx forward Jessica Shepard finished with 12 points and nine rebounds.
Wings rookie Azzi Fudd struggled badly in her matchup against Miles, who was selected one spot after Fudd at No. 2 overall in the draft in April. Fudd finished with six points on 2-for-12 shooting, and she had zero assists and two turnovers in 30 minutes.
The Lynx sprinted to a 30-18 lead at the end of the first quarter.
Ogunbowale pulled Dallas within 12-11 when she sank a 3-pointer with 5:41 remaining in the first quarter.
Minnesota responded with a 11-0 run to seize a 23-11 advantage. Howard started the scoring binge when she made a layup off a feed from Miles, and Williams added six straight points on a trio of baskets. Miles punctuated the run with a 3-pointer from 25 feet.
The Wings fell further behind in the second quarter as the Lynx built a 58-38 halftime lead.
Minnesota led by as many as 27 points before the break. Anastasiia Olairi Kosu made a layup to give the Lynx a 56-29 lead with 1:24 left in the half.
The Wings responded with a 9-2 run to cut the deficit to 20. Bueckers scored all nine of Dallas’ points with three 3-pointers during the run, including one with 0.9 seconds remaining before the buzzer.
Minnesota led comfortably the rest of the way. Williams put the Lynx at the 100-point mark with a pull-up jumper in the final minute.

Braves' Ronald Acuna Jr. exits vs. White Sox with hamstring tightness

The team later described Acuna’s ailment as hamstring tightness.
While attempting to leg out an infield single, Acuna pulled up and hobbled past first base and then off the field into the locker room after appearing to sustain the injury on his final step before reaching the bag.
He was replaced in right field and atop the lineup by Eli White.
Acuna, the 2018 National League Rookie of the Year and 2023 NL MVP, missed 14 games earlier this season due to a hamstring strain while similarly trying to leg out an infield hit. He saw his 2021 and 2024 seasons end prematurely due to torn ACLs.
The five-time All-Star entered the day hitting .254 with seven homers and 22 RBIs in 52 games. He’s a career .287 hitter with 193 homers and 481 RBIs over 869 games across nine seasons with Atlanta.

Freddie Freeman posts 2,500th hit in 10-run 7th as Dodgers drub Pirates

Mandatory Credit: Charles LeClaire-Imagn Images Freddie Freeman recorded his 2,500th career hit, Andy Pages drove in three runs and Shohei Ohtani drove in two more during the Los Angeles Dodgers’ 10-run seventh inning, which propelled them to a 12-3 win over the host Pittsburgh Pirates on Tuesday night.
In the seventh, Pages hit a two-run home run off Pirates reliever Wilber Dotel (1-1) and a sacrifice fly off Brandan Bidois. Ohtani hit an RBI double against Dotel, then Bidois walked him with the bases loaded to force in another run.
Freeman’s milestone came on an RBI single up the middle off Bidois to score Alex Freeland and cap the scoring in the inning.
Every Dodger in the starting lineup scored in the inning as the visitors sent 15 batters to the plate.
Paul Skenes started for the Pirates, who lost their fourth in a row, and gave up two runs on six hits and two walks and struck out seven over six innings.
Skenes retired Ohtani all three times he faced him, including a strikeout in the third.
Dotel allowed six runs (five earned) on five hits and one walk without recording an out. The Pirates needed 68 pitches and used three relievers until Mookie Betts lined out to left against Dennis Santana to end the seventh.
Dotel had allowed two runs in his first 16 2/3 career innings before Tuesday.
The first nine Dodgers reached safely until Dalton Rushing struck out in his second at-bat of the seventh. Rushing started behind the plate for the third consecutive game with Will Smith still dealing with neck stiffness.
Max Muncy finished with three hits and an RBI while Freeman, Betts, Freeland and Santiago Espinal each had two of Los Angeles’ 15 hits.
In the sixth, Will Klein (2-2) relieved starter Eric Lauer, who gave up two runs on back-to-back home runs by Bryan Reynolds and Ryan O’Hearn with two outs in the first. Lauer struck out five and allowed three hits and no walks before Klein struck out three over 1 1/3 scoreless innings.
Pittsburgh infielder Tyler Callihan made his first career pitching appearance and threw a scoreless ninth.
Oneil Cruz was a late scratch for the Pirates as he continues to deal with left hand discomfort.
