Angels activate RHP Grayson Rodriguez to face Dodgers

Mandatory Credit: Allan Henry-Imagn Images The Los Angeles Angels activated Grayson Rodriguez from the injured list in advance of the right-hander’s debut with the club in a home start against the Los Angeles Dodgers on Sunday.
In a corresponding move, the Angels optioned right-hander Alek Manoah to Triple-A Salt Lake.
Rodriguez, 26, was acquired in a trade with the Baltimore Orioles this past offseason for outfielder Taylor Ward. The former first-round draft pick (11th overall) by the Orioles in 2018 did not pitch last season after elbow surgery.
In parts of two major league seasons, Rodriguez is 20-8 with a 4.11 ERA in 43 starts between 2023 and 2024. He pitched 12 2/3 innings for the Angels in spring training before going on the IL with shoulder inflammation.
During two minor league rehab outings, he had a 2.79 ERA over 9 2/3 innings. He fanned 18 batters and only walked a pair.
Manoah, 28, was rocked for nine runs (eight earned) over 1 1/3 innings on Saturday against the Dodgers. It was his third outing with the Angels after missing more than a month at the start of the season with a right middle finger contusion.
Manoah, who spent his first four major league seasons with the Toronto Blue Jays, is 29-20 with a 3.45 ERA in 78 career appearances (75 starts).

All-American, Super Bowl-winning coach Sherman Lewis dies

Michigan State announced his passing Saturday night. It did not provide a cause of death, however.
An All-American halfback with the Spartans, Lewis finished third in the 1963 Heisman Trophy voting after totaling 880 yards and nine touchdowns from scrimmage.

Lewis, a first-team All-American in 1963, served as an assistant coach at MSU before a decorated NFL coaching career that included four Super Bowl titles.

Lewis played with the Toronto Argonauts (1964) in the CFL and the New York Jets (1966-67) in the AFL before returning to his alma mater as an assistant coach under Duffy Daugherty in 1969. He remained on the Michigan State staff until 1982.
Pro Football Hall of Fame member Bill Walsh hired him to the San Francisco 49ers’ coaching staff in 1983. He won three Super Bowl rings during his nine-year run with the 49ers as running backs coach before picking up another ring during his time as the offensive coordinator for the Green Bay Packers (1992-99).
Lewis also was an offensive coordinator with the Minnesota Vikings (2000-01) and Detroit Lions (2003-04) as well as an offensive consultant with the Washington franchise (2009).
The Pro Football Hall of Fame recognized Lewis in the Awards of Excellence Class of 2023 on June 28, 2023. The Award of Excellence program honors significant contributors to the game in five categories, including assistant coaches.

Pirates place Ryan O'Hearn on IL, activate Jake Mangum

Mandatory Credit: Charles LeClaire-Imagn Images The Pittsburgh Pirates placed right fielder/first baseman Ryan O’Hearn on the 10-day injured list Sunday with a right quad strain.
Outfielder Jake Mangum was reinstated from the 10-day injured list to replace O’Hearn on the 26-man roster.
O’Hearn exited Pittsburgh’s 6-0 loss to the Philadelphia Phillies on Saturday due to the injury. He said he sustained the injury while coming in to field a pop fly in the second inning.
“I felt like the very top of my quad/hip flexor grab on me, big time, and I immediately knew that felt weird,” O’Hearn told reporters. “I went inside the dugout, came out to hit, and tried to jog after the pop fly. I felt it, tried to go back out for the inning, but every time I tried to do more than a walk or slow jog, my leg was grabbing on me.”
O’Hearn, 32, is batting .289 with seven home runs and 29 RBIs in 44 games during his first season in Pittsburgh.
Mangum, 30, was placed on the injured list with a left hamstring strain on May 8, retroactive to May 6. He is batting .260 with three RBIs in 30 games this season.

Cubs add LHP Ty Blach, option LHP Javier Assad

Downing-Imagn Images The Chicago Cubs selected the contract of left-hander Ty Blach from Triple-A Iowa on Sunday.
In corresponding moves, the Cubs optioned right-hander Javier Assad to Triple-A and transferred right-hander Hunter Harvey to the 60-day injured list.
Blach, 35, is set to make his Cubs debut after he went 2-3 with a 5.23 ERA in five appearances (three starts) at Iowa. Over seven major league seasons, he is 23-33 with a 5.42 ERA in 156 appearances (70 starts) for the San Francisco Giants (2016-19), Baltimore Orioles (2019) and Colorado Rockies (2022-24).
The Cubs are expected to use Blach out of the bullpen.
Assad, 28, was 3-1 with a 5.88 ERA in eight appearances (three starts) for the Cubs this season and has gone 21-13 with a 3.61 ERA in 86 career appearances (57 starts) over five seasons with Chicago.
Harvey, 31, was placed on the IL last month with right triceps inflammation after going 0-1 with a 6.75 ERA in four relief appearances this season.
