Padres end lengthy offensive drought, take down Cards
May 9, 2026; San Diego, California, USA; San Diego Padres third baseman Manny Machado (13) celebrates with right fielder Fernando Tatis Jr. (23) after hitting a one run home run during the eighth inning against the St. Louis Cardinals at Petco Park. Mandatory Credit: David Frerker-Imagn Images Ty France and Manny Machado homered Saturday, while Fernando Tatis Jr. supplied a tiebreaking hit during a three-run fifth inning that lifted the San Diego Padres to a 4-2 win over the visiting St. Louis Cardinals.
Starter Randy Vasquez (4-1) scattered six hits over five innings while allowing just one run. Vasquez walked none and fanned six before San Diego’s high-leverage relievers took care of the rest.
St. Louis touched Adrian Morejon for a run in the eighth on Ivan Herrera’s RBI double that scored JJ Wetherholt. Mason Miller came in to get the final out of the eighth on Jordan Walker’s groundout, then pitched the ninth for his 12th save in as many chances.
Dustin May (3-4) pitched well aside from the fifth. He permitted three hits and three runs (two earned) over six innings with two walks and seven strikeouts.
Cardinals pitching brought a 17-inning scoreless streak against the Padres into the game. May took a no-hit bid into the fifth before France unloaded a 405-foot shot over the wall in center, his fourth of the year.
San Diego pressed the issue further with a walk to Sung-Mun Song and the first of Freddy Fermin’s two singles. A passed ball on Pedro Pages moved both runners up 90 feet before Jackson Merrill fanned. Tatis lofted a two-run single to short right to give the Padres a 3-1 lead.
Machado added insurance in the eighth when he lined a solo homer to left-center, snapping an 0-for-24 skid that dropped his average to .195.
St. Louis used a rare bout of wildness from Miller to construct a threat in the ninth. Walks to Nolan Gorman and Nathan Church put two on with one out and Yohel Pozo reached with two outs when Miller tossed a wild pitch on strike three.
But Miller got Wetherholt to look at a 102 mph fastball for a game-ending strikeout, his fourth of the inning.
Church gave the Cardinals a 1-0 fourth-inning lead with a two-out RBI double.

Reports: Steve Kerr to remain Warriors coach on 2-year deal
Apr 10, 2026; Sacramento, California, USA; Golden State Warriors head coach Steve Kerr looks on before the start of the game against the Sacramento Kings at Golden 1 Center. Mandatory Credit: Robert Edwards-Imagn Images Steve Kerr has agreed to a two-year contract to stay with Golden State after coaching the Warriors for the past 12 seasons, according to reports from ESPN and The Athletic.
Kerr, who made $17.5 million this season, will remain the highest-paid coach in the NBA annually, per the reports. His contract expired this offseason.
Kerr, 60, had been meeting for two weeks with Warriors controlling owner Joe Lacob and general manager Mike Dunleavy to determine the contract terms, per the reports. ESPN reported that money was secondary to making the best basketball decision in those conversations.
Since his first season at the helm in 2014-15, Kerr has guided the franchise to four NBA titles (2015, 2017, 2018 and 2022). He has a 604-353 (.631) regular-season record and 104-48 playoff mark (.684).
However, the Warriors missed the playoffs this season when they lost a play-in game against the Phoenix Suns. It is the second time in three seasons that the team didn’t make the playoff field.
Also, the Warriors were 37-45 to finish below .500 for just the second time in Kerr’s tenure.
He understood that the 111-96 loss to the Suns on April 17 might have been his last game as a coach.
“I still love coaching, but I get it,” Kerr told reporters. “These jobs all have an expiration date. There is a run that happens, and when the run ends, sometimes it’s time for new blood and new ideas.”
Kerr had said if he coaches next season, it will be with superstar guard Stephen Curry and the Warriors.
“That’s part of the equation,” he said. “I don’t want to walk away from Steph. I’m definitely not going and coaching somewhere else next year in the NBA. I would never walk away from Steph. But all this stuff has to be aligned and right. Those are all discussions that will be had.”
Before Kerr coached the Warriors to their first NBA title in 40 years in 2015, he won five as a player with the Chicago Bulls (1996-98) and San Antonio Spurs (1999, 2003).

Alec Bohm homers twice, Phillies handle Rockies
May 9, 2026; Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA; Philadelphia Phillies infielder Alec Bohm (28) hits a home run against the Colorado Rockies in the third inning at Citizens Bank Park. Mandatory Credit: Kyle Ross-Imagn Images Alec Bohm hit two home runs and drove in four runs in his return to the lineup as the host Philadelphia Phillies evened the weekend series with a 9-3 win over the Colorado Rockies on Saturday evening.
Kyle Schwarber added the go-ahead three-run home run in the third as the Phillies lineup tagged Rockies starter Kyle Freeland (1-4) for seven runs (six earned) in five innings.
Willi Castro had a home run and Kyle Karros hit a two-run double for Colorado, which had won 9-7 in 11 innings on Friday.
A two-day break served Bohm well, as the third baseman led off the third with his first home run since Opening Day on March 26 to tie the game at 1-1. Castro’s solo shot for the Rockies in the second inning had opened the scoring.
Bryson Stott and Trea Turner followed Bohm’s homer with singles and Schwarber cleared the bases with his second home run in as many nights to give Philadelphia a 4-1 lead.
Adolis Garcia doubled with one out and Edmundo Sosa brought him home with an RBI single to complete the Phillies’ five-run outburst.
Colorado responded immediately in the fourth. Karros’ double with two outs scored Troy Johnston (single) and Jake McCarthy (walk) and reduced the Philadelphia advantage to 5-3.
Bohm made it the fifth multi-homer game of his career with another solo blast in the bottom of the frame.
Phillies starter Aaron Nola was left with no decision after being pulled with the tying run at the plate with two outs in the fifth. He allowed three runs with six hits and two walks, striking out four.
Tim Mayza (1-1) relieved Nola and got out of the jam.
Colorado’s defense was to blame for the Phillies’ run in the fifth. Garcia went from first to third after shortstop Castro booted a grounder and then scored on Brandon Marsh’s sacrifice fly.
Bohm capped off a 3-for-4 night at the plate with a two-run double in the eighth.
Philadelphia first baseman Bryce Harper exited after the first inning with a migraine. He was replaced by Felix Reyes, who went 0-for-4.
The first pitch of the game was initially set for 6:05 local time but was delayed approximately 25 minutes due to inclement weather in the area.

Hurricanes sweep Flyers in OT, advance to East finals
May 9, 2026; Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA; Carolina Hurricanes center Logan Stankoven (22) celebrates a goal with teammates against the Philadelphia Flyers in game four of the second round of the 2026 Stanely Cup Playoffs at Xfinity Mobile Arena. Mandatory Credit: James Lang-Imagn Images Jackson Blake scored his second goal of the game in overtime and the visiting Carolina Hurricanes swept their second straight Stanley Cup Playoffs series with a 3-2 win against the Philadelphia Flyers in Game 4 of their Eastern Conference semifinal matchup on Saturday evening.
At 5:31 of the extra session, Blake scored off Flyers goaltender Dan Vladar’s left shoulder from between the hash marks to finish off a rush and advance the Hurricanes to the conference finals against either the Buffalo Sabres or Montreal Canadiens. That series is tied 1-1 entering Game 3 on Sunday.
Blake also had an assist, Logan Stankoven also scored, Taylor Hall had three assists and Frederik Andersen made 15 saves for Carolina, which became the first team since the Edmonton Oilers in 1985 to begin a postseason 8-0.
Tyson Foerster and Alex Bump scored and Vladar made 37 saves for the Flyers.
Foerster scored his first goal of the playoffs to give Philadelphia a 1-0 lead at 7:50 of the first period.
Porter Martone fed a pass ahead to Trevor Zegras, who had more speed as they both crossed the Carolina blue line. Zegras pulled up along the wall and saucered a centering pass to Foerster entering the zone. He brought the puck to the right hash marks before scoring with a wrist shot.
Blake took a wrist shot from near the wall above the right faceoff circle and the puck hit the midsection of Flyers defenseman Jamie Drysdale as he battled Logan Stankoven in front of the crease, causing it to be redirected into his own net and tying it at 12:35 of the second period.
The Hurricanes briefly thought they moved ahead on a goal by Mark Jankowski at 13:03 of the second, but the Flyers successfully challenged for goalie interference on William Carrier as he jostled with Oliver Bonk in front of the crease.
Hall made a centering pass to Stankoven on a 3-on-2 rush and he redirected the puck into the net for his NHL-leading seventh goal of the postseason, giving the Hurricanes their first lead of the game, 2-1, at 4:13 of the third period.
That lead didn’t last long as Travis Konecny forced a turnover below the Carolina goal line and passed the puck out front to Bump, who scored with a one-timer from between the hash marks to tie it at 5:52.
