Darryn Peterson: Creatine led to cramping at Kansas
Mar 3, 2026; Tempe, Arizona, USA; Kansas Jayhawks guard Darryn Peterson (22) reacts against the Arizona State Sun Devils in the first half at Desert Financial Arena. Mandatory Credit: Mark J. Rebilas-Imagn Images Top NBA draft prospect Darryn Peterson says high doses of creatine led to his repeated cramping issues at Kansas.
The 19-year-old guard told ESPN this week that doctors diagnosed the cause after a round of bloodwork.
Peterson, a potential No. 1 pick in June’s draft, missed 11 of the Jayhawks’ 35 games as a 2025-26 freshman.
He said he never took creatine, a popular supplement for building muscle strength and growth, before college.
“But after the season I took two weeks off and they did tests which showed my baseline level was already high,” he told ESPN. “So, they said when I dosed (increasing a dose over time to create maximum benefit at the beginning of taking a supplement), it must’ve made the levels unsafe.”
Peterson was taken by ambulance to a hospital following a September boot camp when he experienced cramping throughout his whole body.
“I made it to the training room and just started begging them to call 911,” he said. “They were trying to get a vein to get me the IV, get me back hydrated. But I was cramping so hard they couldn’t get a vein. I thought I was going to die on the training table that day.”
Throughout the season, Peterson said he lived in fear that another scary episode could happen.
“Whenever I felt anything like that come on, my initial thought was that it might get to that again,” he said. “And I can’t let that happen and be embarrassed and have that on TV and all that.
“It kind of put me in a tizzy because I didn’t know what was causing it. Nothing has ever been wrong with me before. Basketball is my life. What I love to do. But something was going on and I couldn’t figure it out.”
Peterson averaged 20.2 points, 4.2 rebounds, 1.6 assists and 1.4 steals in 24 games (23 starts), shooting 38.2% from 3-point distance and making the All-Big 12 second team.
Peterson said he has not experienced any issues since he stopped taking creatine. He has been training for the NBA combine that begins Sunday in Chicago.
“I’ve been thinking about how differently things could have been (at Kansas) if I didn’t get hurt or have all this stuff going on,” he said. “When I was out there, I felt like I still did all right. But there was another level of me that people didn’t get to see.”

Revolution stay hot, continue Union's miserable start
May 9, 2026; Foxborough, Massachusetts, USA; Philadelphia Union midfielder Danley Jean Jacques (21) works for the ball against New England Revolution forward Griffin Yow (7) in the first half at Gillette Stadium. Mandatory Credit: David Butler II-Imagn Images Carles Gil scored in the 87th minute as the New England Revolution overcame an own goal to remain perfect at home with a 2-1 victory over the Philadelphia Union on Saturday night in Foxborough, Mass.
Luca Langoni also scored in the second half for the Revolution (7-3-1, 22 points) who have won their first six home games for the first time in club history.
New England, which has not reached the MLS playoffs in the last two seasons, also is unbeaten in its last seven matches, with six wins.
First-year coach Marko Mitrovic now has the best start ever for a new coach in the 30-year history of the Revs.
It was another tough loss for Philadelphia (1-8-3, 6 points), the Supporter’s Shield winner last year for the best record in the MLS, now buried in last place in the Eastern Conference. The Union opened the season with a club-record six straight losses.
Both teams put just two shots on goal each. Revolution goalkeeper Matt Turner had the game’s lone save.
New England’s win came against its nemesis. Philadelphia had dominated New England, winning the last four meetings, outscoring the Revs 11-1.
In an uneventful first half there were no shots on goal, but the Union took the lead in the 37th minute on a play started by Olivier Mbaizo with a long ball over the top of the Revs defense.
New England defender Will Sands beat Philadelphia striker Milan Iloski to the ball at the top of the box but inadvertently kicked the ball just inside the right post past Turner.
In the 61st minute, the Revs got the equalizer. Langoni started the sequence with a corner kick and the ball was headed out of the box
Gil gathered the ball and slipped a pass to Langoni, who drove to his right and fired a curling shot from outside the left side of the box just inside the far post for his second goal of the season and a 1-1 tie.
The game-winner came on a transition play with Dor Turgeman slipping a pass in the middle of the box to Gil, who fired a left-footed shot into the left side of the goal for his fourth goal of the season and first in 17 matches against the Union.

Miguel Vargas, White Sox power way past Mariners
May 9, 2026; Chicago, Illinois, USA; Chicago White Sox third baseman Miguel Vargas (20) rounds the bases after hitting a two-run home run against the Seattle Mariners during the third inning at Rate Field. Mandatory Credit: Kamil Krzaczynski-Imagn Images Miguel Vargas homered twice and Colson Montgomery also went deep to back five strong innings from Anthony Kay and boost the Chicago White Sox to a 6-1 victory against the visiting Seattle Mariners on Saturday.
Chicago stopped a three-game losing streak behind its second straight multi-homer game. Relievers Grant Taylor, Bryan Hudson and Tyler Schweitzer combined on four shutout innings to finish a combined four-hitter.
Montgomery started the latest White Sox power display early, reaching Seattle starting pitcher Luis Castillo for a two-run blast with two out in the first inning.
Castillo worked around a leadoff single in the second but couldn’t strand a leadoff runner an inning later. Sam Antonacci was hit by a pitch to open the third and scored when Vargas homered to left-center.
Castillo remained winless in eight starts this season. He fell to 0-4 after scattering five hits for four runs in four innings. The right-hander had six strikeouts against zero walks but yielded multiple homers for the second time in his past three outings.
Seattle struggled to mount an attack after scoring 12 runs on 12 hits in the series opener.
Kay (2-1) spaced three hits, all singles, and one run in five innings. He walked two and struck out five, one shy of his season high.
Kay allowed baserunners in every inning but the second but kept the Mariners off the scoreboard apart from a Rob Refsnyder RBI sacrifice fly in the fifth.
The Mariners’ relief corps was sharp in spots but not perfect. Josh Simpson retired the first two batters he faced in the fifth before Vargas connected for a solo shot to push the Chicago lead to 5-1.
It was Vargas’ first multi-homer game since May 16, 2025. Teammate Tristan Peters also had two hits.
Julio Rodriguez singled twice for the Mariners, who stranded seven runners while going 0-for-5 with men in scoring position.
Edgar Quero provided an insurance run for Chicago on a forceout in the eighth.
Montgomery has reached base in 21 consecutive games.
Left fielder Andrew Benintendi (neck stiffness) was a late scratch for Chicago.

Padres end lengthy offense drought, take down Cards
May 9, 2026; San Diego, California, USA; San Diego Padres third baseman Manny Machado (13) celebrates with right fielder Fernando Tatis Jr. (23) after hitting a one run home run during the eighth inning against the St. Louis Cardinals at Petco Park. Mandatory Credit: David Frerker-Imagn Images Ty France and Manny Machado homered Saturday, while Fernando Tatis Jr. supplied a tiebreaking hit during a three-run fifth inning that lifted the San Diego Padres to a 4-2 win over the visiting St. Louis Cardinals.
Starter Randy Vasquez (4-1) scattered six hits over five innings while allowing just one run. Vasquez walked none and fanned six before San Diego’s high-leverage relievers took care of the rest.
St. Louis touched Adrian Morejon for a run in the eighth on Ivan Herrera’s RBI double that scored JJ Wetherholt. Mason Miller came in to get the final out of the eighth on Jordan Walker’s groundout, then pitched the ninth for his 12th save in as many chances.
Dustin May (3-4) pitched well aside from the fifth. He permitted three hits and three runs (two earned) over six innings with two walks and seven strikeouts.
Cardinals pitching brought a 17-inning scoreless streak against the Padres into the game. May took a no-hit bid into the fifth before France unloaded a 405-foot shot over the wall in center, his fourth of the year.
San Diego pressed the issue further with a walk to Sung-Mun Song and the first of Freddy Fermin’s two singles. A passed ball on Pedro Pages moved both runners up 90 feet before Jackson Merrill fanned. Tatis lofted a two-run single to short right to give the Padres a 3-1 lead.
Machado added insurance in the eighth when he lined a solo homer to left-center, snapping an 0-for-24 skid that dropped his average to .195.
St. Louis used a rare bout of wildness from Miller to construct a threat in the ninth. Walks to Nolan Gorman and Nathan Church put two on with one out and Yohel Pozo reached with two outs when Miller tossed a wild pitch on strike three.
But Miller got Wetherholt to look at a 102 mph fastball for a game-ending strikeout, his fourth of the inning.
Church gave the Cardinals a 1-0 fourth-inning lead with a two-out RBI double.
