Khamzat Chimaev, Sean Strickland to settle bad-blood feud at UFC 328
Aug 16, 2025; Chicago, Illinois, UNITED STATES; Dricus Du Plessis Murphy (red gloves) fights Khamzat Chimaev (blue gloves) during UFC 319 at United Center. Mandatory Credit: Kamil Krzaczynski-Imagn Images Things have reached a boiling point in the middleweight division ahead of Saturday’s UFC 328 event in Newark, N.J., as newly minted UFC middleweight champion Khamzat Chimaev looks to handle unfinished business against former champion Sean Strickland in the headliner of a 13-fight card.
The friends-turned-enemies let the racial insults fly Thursday evening at the Prudential Center in front of a rambunctious crowd at the pre-fight press conference.
The UFC allowed both men to do the traditional ceremonial faceoff before security pulled both off the stage after Chimaev kicked Strickland in the leg, marking a dark climax to a chaotic week of separation before the fight.
Strickland (30-7 MMA) was visibly frustrated the entire press conference, screaming throughout at Chimaev (15-0 MMA) about his Russian heritage and how he’s now classified as fighting from the United Arab Emirates. Chimaev, in turn, invoked Strickland’s abusive father and childhood trauma.
“He’s going to be dead in two days,” Chimaev said. ” … I’ll be your daddy in the cage. I’ve been all day, every day, your daddy. You know about it. I’m your daddy. Listen to your daddy.”
UFC CEO Dana White said the rivalry has bad blood, which has made it a top-three rivalry in the promotion’s history.
Unlike Dricus du Plessis, who lost to Chimaev at UFC 319 after Chimaev used a dominant wrestling base, Strickland made one thing clear.
“They don’t want to watch a boring-ass f****** fight,” Strickland said. “I want you to wrestle. I will outwrestle you.”
Strickland described Chimaev’s sparring session against him, which has since resurfaced on social media, as a 2022 “warm-up match” that set Chimaev off.
Hostility aside, Chimaev enters the fight with four submission wins in nine UFC matches. Strickland earned the title shot off a third-round TKO defeat of Anthony Hernandez at UFC Houston in February.
The fight is set as a five-rounder, marking Chimaev’s first title defense while Strickland attempts to regain the title after relinquishing it to du Plessis in January of 2024 at UFC 297.
The co-main event sees a re-booked flyweight title fight between Joshua Van and Tatsuro Taira. The pair were supposed to meet at UFC 327 last month in Miami, Fla., but Van sustained an undisclosed minor injury that shifted the fight to this event.
Van (16-2 MMA) became the new UFC flyweight champion in December at UFC 323, as an arm injury to then-champion Alexandre Pantoja ended the fight after just 26 seconds. He is the first fighter born this century to become a UFC champion, while Taira (18-1 MMA) aims to be the first UFC champion from Japan with a win over Van, who is from Myanmar.
The main card gets underway on Paramount Plus at 9 p.m. ET.
Main card (subject to change)

Wild handle Avalanche first postseason loss in dominant fashion
May 9, 2026; Saint Paul, Minnesota, USA; Colorado Avalanche center Parker Kelly (17) on a breakaway against Minnesota Wild goaltender Jesper Wallstedt (30) in the first period of game three of the second round of the 2026 Stanley Cup Playoffs at Grand Casino Arena. Mandatory Credit: Matt Blewett-Imagn Images Kirill Kaprizov and Brock Faber each finished with a goal and two assists as the Minnesota Wild pulled away for a 5-1 win over the Colorado Avalanche in Game 3 of their Western Conference semifinals series on Saturday night in Saint Paul, Minn.
Quinn Hughes tallied a goal and an assist for Minnesota, which pulled within 2-1 in the best-of-seven series. Ryan Hartman and Matt Boldy also scored for the Wild.
Nathan MacKinnon scored the only goal for Colorado, which lost for the first time in the postseason after entering with a 6-0 record.
Wild goaltender Jesper Wallstedt turned aside 34 of 35 shots to earn the victory.
Avalanche goaltender Scott Wedgewood allowed three goals on 12 shots before he was replaced in the second period. Mackenzie Blackwood saw his first action of the postseason and stopped 12 of 13 shots in backup duty.
The teams will reconvene for Game 4 on Monday night in Minnesota.
Minnesota grabbed a 2-0 lead in the first period. Kaprizov opened the scoring with 4:49 remaining in the first period. He raced toward the net, took a pass from Faber and finished with a wrist shot from the left side of the crease.
Hughes scored less than two minutes later to give the Wild a two-goal advantage. He handled the puck from the left circle to the top of the slot and fired a wrist shot through traffic for the power-play goal.
Another power-play goal gave Minnesota a 3-0 lead with 15:37 left in the second period. Hartman parked in front of the crease and knocked in a shot from the point by Mats Zuccarello.
The Avalanche got on the scoreboard with 6:49 remaining in the second period. Wallstedt stopped Colorado’s initial shot, but MacKinnon spotted the rebound and punched it in for the power-play goal.
The Wild needed only 20 seconds to respond. Faber scored on a deflection to increase the Wild’s lead to 4-1 with 6:29 to go in the second period.
Boldy capped the scoring with an empty-net goal with 3.3 seconds remaining.

Yankees recall top prospect, put Jasson Dominguez on IL
May 7, 2026; Bronx, New York, USA; New York Yankees left fielder Jasson Dominguez (24) makes a catch against the wall on a fly ball by Texas Rangers designated hitter Brandon Nimmo (not pictured) during the first inning at Yankee Stadium. Dominguez was injured on the play and taken out of the game. Mandatory Credit: Brad Penner-Imagn Images The New York Yankees recalled prized prospect Spencer Jones on Friday and placed fellow outfielder Jasson Dominguez on the 10-day injured list with a low-grade AC sprain in his left shoulder.
The moves comes one day after Dominguez slammed into the outfield wall while making a leaping catch during the first inning of New York’s 9-2 victory over the Texas Rangers.
The 6-foot-7 Jones was joined by right-hander Kervin Castro in being recalled from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Friday.
Jones, who turns 25 on May 14, was a first-round pick (25th overall) by the Yankees in the 2022 MLB Draft out of Vanderbilt. He is batting .258 with 11 home runs and 41 RBIs in 33 games at Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. He is ranked as the organization’s No. 6 prospect by MLB Pipeline.
“The last three or four weeks have been a lot of consistent at-bats,” Yankees manager Aaron Boone said of Jones. “The power has been there; less swing and miss, which is some of the things we were seeing a little bit in spring training.
“After that second week in Triple-A where he struggled a little bit with swing and miss, he’s cleaned that up. I think I saw he’s leading all of Minor League Baseball in RBIs. He’s put himself in the mix.”
Dominguez, 23, is batting .200 (6-for-30) with a homer and four RBIs in nine games with the Yankees this season.
Castro, 27, is 1-0 with two saves and a 3.14 ERA in 11 relief appearances this season with Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

With this summer’s World Cup fast approaching, Canada captain Alphonso Davies will be sidelined several weeks with a left hamstring injury.
The 25-year-old Bayern Munich left-back sustained the injury in Wednesday’s Champions League semifinal against Paris Saint-Germain, the Bundesliga club confirmed Friday.
Canada Soccer said it will remain in close contact with Davies and Bayern’s medical team in Germany.
“Our focus is supporting his recovery and providing every available resource, including specialized soft tissue expertise, to give him the best possible pathway back to full fitness ahead of the FIFA World Cup,” said a statement from Canada Soccer.
Davies has scored 15 goals in 58 career caps with Canada, including the country’s first-ever goal at a World Cup at the 2022 tournament in Qatar. He is a two-time Concacaf Player of the Year (2021, 2022).
Co-host Canada is in Group B for the 2026 FIFA World Cup and opens play on June 12 in Toronto against Bosnia and Herzegovina. Canada will play Qatar on June 18 and Switzerland on June 24, with both matches in Vancouver.
