Bo Horvat nets OT winner as Islanders outlast Penguins
Feb 3, 2026; Elmont, New York, USA; New York Islanders center Bo Horvat (14) celebrates his game winning overtime goal against the Pittsburgh Penguins with center Mathew Barzal (13) and defenseman Matthew Schaefer (48) at UBS Arena. Mandatory Credit: Brad Penner-Imagn Images Bo Horvat scored a breakaway goal 52 seconds into overtime Tuesday night for the New York Islanders, who overcame a trio of deficits to edge the Pittsburgh Penguins, 5-4, in Elmont, N.Y.
Brett Kulak whiffed on a shot deep in the Islanders’ zone before Mathew Barzal picked up the puck and passed to Horvat, who beat Stuart Skinner for his second goal of the game.
Barzal, Matthew Schaefer and Ryan Pulock also scored for the Islanders, who snapped a two-game losing streak and moved within a point of the second-place Penguins in the Metropolitan Division. Goalie Ilya Sorokin made 31 saves.
Anthony Mantha, Egor Chinakhov, Bryan Rust and Justin Brazeau scored for the Penguins, who have lost two straight following a six-game winning streak. Skinner recorded 18 saves.
Mantha opened the scoring with a nifty assist from Brazeau, who maneuvered a one-handed pass around Adam Pelech at the goal line to Mantha, who beat Sorokin stick side with 7:51 left in the first.
The Islanders tied the score and took the lead in the final 79 seconds of the period. After Barzal’s shot glanced off Skinner’s glove, Ryan Shea tried to backhand the puck out of the crease. But the puck hit Anders Lee’s skate and deflected off Skinner’s pads before Horvat lunged past Shea and tucked home a backhanded shot.
Schaefer gave the Islanders the lead with 3.3 seconds remaining, when his shot from the high slot sailed past Skinner as he was screened by Lee.
The Penguins evened the game at 3:52 of the second. Erik Karlsson’s shot glanced off the back boards and was retrieved by Thomas Novak, who fed Chinakhov before the right winger beat Sorokin from the left faceoff circle.
Rust put the Penguins ahead in unusual fashion with 5:51 remaining in the period, when his shot from the goal line glanced off Sorokin’s glove and into the net.
Barzal tied it again with 11:23 left in the third when his shot from the high slot caromed off the far post as Skinner was screened by teammate Ilya Solovyov.
Brazeau snapped the tie just 2:03 later, when he redirected a shot by Brett Kulak before Pulock again pulled the Islanders even by scoring from just above the left faceoff circle with 4:36 remaining.

Red Wings, Mammoth hope to notch one more win before break
Jan 29, 2026; Raleigh, North Carolina, USA; Utah Mammoth right wing Clayton Keller (9) takes s shot against the Carolina Hurricanes during the second period at Lenovo Center. Mandatory Credit: James Guillory-Imagn Images The Detroit Red Wings and Utah Mammoth will aim to generate some momentum before the Olympic break when they face off on Wednesday night in Salt Lake City.
Both teams were on losing skids before posting wins Monday night. Detroit had lost three in a row and four of five, but surprised the Colorado Avalanche 2-0 in the second of a home-and-home set. Utah had lost two straight and three of four, but outscored the visiting Vancouver Canucks 6-2.
The Mammoth will play the third of a six-game homestand, split in half by the break. The Red Wings will conclude their five-game road trip with three more after the break.
This will be the second and final meeting of the season for the teams after visiting Utah topped Detroit 4-1 on Dec. 17. Clayton Keller had a goal and an assist and Karel Vejmelka made 27 saves.
On Monday, John Gibson made 21 saves for the Red Wings in the 2-0 win. The shutout was Gibson’s fourth of the season and 28th of his career.
“Top to the bottom, it was a total team effort,” Gibson said. “Everybody was committed to playing defense, offense, getting pucks deep, forecheck. So, I think it was probably one of the most complete games that at least I’ve been a part of this year.”
The Avalanche had not been shut out since Feb. 4, 2025, by the Canucks.
Lucas Raymond had a goal and an assist, and Dylan Larkin had two assists for the Red Wings, who avenged a 5-0 home loss to the Avalanche on Saturday. It was Detroit’s first road win against Colorado since a 5-3 victory at Coors Field on Feb. 27, 2016.
“I thought it was outstanding,” Red Wings coach Todd McLellan said. “We had some legs, we were connected, we made some passes, we defended well. Just about everything that could get turned upside down (from Saturday’s 5-0 loss) was.”
In Utah, Nick Schmaltz recorded his second hat trick of the season and added an assist in the win over Vancouver.
“I think Schmaltz was really good everywhere,” Utah coach Andre Tourigny said. “He was good defensively, stripping pucks, his body position was good. I liked his game a lot.”
Schmaltz (22 goals) reached the 20-goal mark for the fifth consecutive season and sixth time in his career. It was his third career hat trick.
Ten Utah skaters made the scoresheet, including JJ Peterka, who scored his 20th goal of the season. Defenseman John Marino had three assists and Lawson Crouse had a goal and an assist for the Mammoth, who are 7-1-1 in their past nine home games. Vejmelka made 21 saves.
Marino has four points in his past two games and established a new career high with 28 points.
“He’s a great player,” Schmaltz said of Marino. “I think he’s very underrated. He’s got a lot of plays with the puck, he waits off defenders, and makes a lot of good plays in the middle of the ice. Super great player, so I’m very happy to see him having success.”

Luke Skaljac scored a career-high 19 points as No. 23 Miami (Ohio) remained unbeaten with a 73-71 victory over host Buffalo on Tuesday night in a Mid-American Conference contest.
Buffalo closed to 73-71 on a Noah Batchelor 3-pointer with 12 seconds to play and had a chance to win the game, but Ryan Sabol’s 3-pointer with 4 seconds left hit the front rim and bounced out.
Skaljac also had five steals, four rebounds and three assists. Miami (23-0, 11-0 MAC) received an 11-point performance from Brant Byers and 10 points, five rebounds and eight assists from Peter Suder.
Arizona (22-0) is the only other unbeaten Division I team in the country.
Buffalo’s Angelo Brizzi made nine of 14 field-goal attempts and scored a game-high 22 points. Daniel Freitag added 18 points, seven assists and four rebounds for the Bulls (14-9, 4-7).
Suder’s layup capped a 10-0 spurt that handed Miami a 48-37 lead with 17:56 to play. The RedHawks had their largest lead, 52-40, after Skaljac’s jumper with 16:01 left, but Buffalo scored the next nine points to pull within three. It was 62-62 after Brizzi’s 3-pointer with 6:39 remaining.
The teams tied twice more before the RedHawks opened a 72-66 advantage on Skaljac’s layup with 3:02 left and 18-foot jumper with 1:35 remaining.
Brizzi responded with a dunk with 1:20 to go before Justin Kirby made one of two free throws with 32 seconds left for Miami’s 73-68 lead.
The Bulls had a significant edge in the game at the free-throw line, where they made 14 of 18 attempts. The RedHawks didn’t attempt a free throw until 9:25 remained in the game. Miami was 3 of 6 at the foul line.

No. 4 Duke's dominant first half enough to skip past Boston College
Feb 3, 2026; Durham, North Carolina, USA; Duke Blue Devils forward Cameron Boozer (12) lays the ball up in front of Boston College Eagles guard Fred Payne (5) during the first half at Cameron Indoor Stadium. Mandatory Credit: Rob Kinnan-Imagn Images Cameron Boozer had a double-double of 19 points and 12 rebounds to power No. 4 Duke to its 10th straight victory, a 67-49 home win over Boston College on Tuesday night in Durham, N.C.
Boozer shot 9-of-17 from the floor and also tallied two assists and a season-best five steals for Duke (21-1, 10-0 ACC). Isaiah Evans added 12 points for the Blue Devils, while Patrick Ngongba also flirted with a double-double, totaling nine points and nine boards.
Fred Payne paced Boston College (9-13, 2-7) with 14 points in the seventh loss for the Eagles in their last nine games.
Duke led wire-to-wire and jumped out on a 13-0 run to open the game, powered by seven points from Boozer. The Blue Devils later put together a 13-5 run and went on to lead by as many as 18 points in the first half.
Before intermission, Boozer drove right and threw down a one-handed slam with ease over Boston College defender Jayden Hastings, giving Duke a 42-27 lead at the break.
After shooting 60.7% from the floor in the first half, though, the Blue Devils struggled to keep that offensive firepower consistent in the second, shooting just 31.8% from the floor. The 25 points that Duke scored in the second half were the fewest it has scored in a half all season.
Boston College never threatened to take the lead, as Duke was able to keep a comfortable double-digit advantage in the second half despite its shooting woes. The Blue Devils also had just two turnovers in the first half, but seven in the second. The early hole the Eagles dug themselves just proved to be too deep to overcome.
Duke is off to its best start to a season since the 2007-08 campaign, back when head coach Jon Scheyer was a sophomore guard playing for Mike Krzyzewski.
Next up for the Blue Devils is the rekindling of one of the top rivalries in all of college sports, as it travels down Tobacco Road on Saturday to face No. 14 North Carolina in Chapel Hill.
