Seahawks Opening Night notebook: Goal-line nightmare revisited

SAN JOSE, Calif. — Not surprisingly, Seattle Seahawks coach Mike Macdonald was asked what he would do if his team was at the New England Patriots’ 1-yard line in the final minute of the Super Bowl and needed a touchdown to take the lead.

It was 11 years ago that the Seahawks faced that same situation against the Patriots in Super Bowl XLIX.

Instead of handing off the ball to star running back Marshawn Lynch, quarterback Russell Wilson attempted a pass that was intercepted by Malcolm Butler, clinching the Patriots’ 28-24 victory.

Would the Seahawks call for a run or a pass if the situation arose again?

“Is Beast Mode in the backfield?” Macdonald replied, using Lynch’s nickname, while meeting the media at Super Bowl Opening Night.

Seahawks quarterback Sam Darnold faced the same question.

“I know that’s a sore subject for a lot of people (in Seattle), but, uhh … we’ll say pass,” Darnold said with a laugh.

–With their defense drawing comparisons to the “Legion of Boom” that helped the Seahawks to two Super Bowl appearances a decade ago, this year’s unit decided it needed its own identity.

The players settled on the Dark Side.

“We had a few names come, thrown at the wall, and I think the Dark Side stuck because one of Coach Mike’s messages is a play style and a place that nobody wants to play … and in Seattle it gets dark during the wintertimes and we shut some teams out this year, no points on the board,” defensive lineman Leonard Williams said. “So we have a very suffocating defense, I would say, and that’s why we came up with the Dark Side.”

Added safety Julian Love: “We carry ourselves way different than those guys, than those legends. We’re just trying to create an identity for ourselves.”

–Seahawks receiver Cooper Kupp, the MVP of Super Bowl LVI while with the Los Angeles Rams, was asked about coming from Eastern Washington University in Cheney, a Football Championship Subdivision school.

“It was a steppingstone,” Kupp said. “It was one step along this path, along this journey. I don’t think of it as overcoming anything. That was my path to continue playing football in college and gave me an opportunity to be in front of the NFL people and go out there and make my dream a reality.

“There’s really good football players across the nation, (Division II), (Division III), all over the place. Any opportunity to play football, I’m all in on.”

–It wouldn’t be a Super Bowl opening night without an appearance from Guillermo Rodriguez, the sidekick from “Jimmy Kimmel Live!”

Rodriguez presented Darnold with a button that read “Ham for Sam” and then a giant ham-shaped foam hat before encouraging media members to chant “Ham for Sam!”

Darnold briefly donned the hat before switching back to his baseball cap.

Rodriguez also gave Darnold an apron with “Ham for Sam” on the front.

Norway team reacts with skepticism to bizarre penis-enhancement claims

PREDAZZO, Italy — Norwegian ski jumpers greeted with skepticism suggestions that anti-doping officials must now police their anatomy as well as their equipment after regulators said they would stay alert to rumors of athletes artificially enlarging their genitals to exploit suit rules at the Milan Cortina Olympics.

The sport briefly found itself in an absurd spotlight after the World Anti-Doping Agency signaled it would watch for evidence of manipulation, following a report in German newspaper Bild which raised fears of some male ski jumpers attempting to manipulate the 3D body-scanning measurements used to size competition suits by temporarily enlarging their penises.

Skiing’s governing body also dismissed talk of competitors injecting paraffin or hyaluronic acid for aerodynamic gain.

Jumpers said the speculation had travelled faster than any athlete down the in-run — and with considerably less grounding.

The story gained international attention and took the spotlight from the competition that is about to start on Saturday with the women’s normal hill individual event.

For many of the Norwegian ski jumpers, talk of a creative attempt to gain extra inches in their jumps was met with skepticism and head-shaking, with several dismissing it as a gimmick and hearsay.

“I do not think we need that kind of attention, and on the women’s side we are quite calm about the subject,” Norway women’s coach Christian Meyer told Reuters.

“I have not seen anything like it, so I am also wondering whether it is true. I actually do not believe it, but if someone is that sick …”

Ski jumper Anna Odine Stroem said the controversy reflected poorly on the sport.

“If it takes something like this to get people watching ski jumping, I do not know what to think. It is sad that we need controversy for people to find our sport endearing or exciting,” she said.

“That is not something we want in our sport,” Johann Andre Forfang added, while fellow Norwegian Kristoffer Eriksen Sundal suggested the spotlight would be better directed elsewhere.

“All interest is good interest, but I wish it came more from what is happening on the hills,” Sundal said.

Memphis shot 47.7% from the field and was 15 of 41 (36.6%) from behind the arc.

The Trail Blazers led by four at halftime outscoring Memphis 38-23 in the third quarter.

It was a two-point margin before Portland scored 21 of the next 27 points to take a 94-77 lead on Grant’s trey with 3:54 left in the quarter.

The Trail Blazers led 106-87 entering the final quarter. Rupert made two 3-pointers in the first 88 seconds of the period as Portland increased its lead to 114-90. The Trail Blazers led by as many as 30.

Memphis never trailed in the first quarter and led by as many as 15 before settling for a 36-25 advantage through 12 minutes.

But Portland shot 70% from the field (14 of 20) in the second quarter en route to holding a four-point halftime edge.

Kawhi Leonard, Clippers send Kings to 11th straight defeat

Kawhi Leonard produced a game-high 31 points, Kris Dunn and Derrick Jones Jr. contributed and-ones to a fourth-quarter pull-away and the visiting Los Angeles Clippers handed the Sacramento Kings their 11th straight defeat, 114-111 on Friday.

Playing short-handed in the aftermath of trades this week that saw them export James Harden and Ivica Zubac, the Clippers trailed 84-81 early in the fourth quarter before outfinishing the Kings for an 11th win in their past 15 games.

Leonard put the rally in motion with a long 2-pointer, after which Brook Lopez gave the Clippers the lead for good on a 3-pointer with 9:50 remaining.

Dunn’s big contribution came on an 11-foot floater on which he was fouled, setting up a three-point play, and two minutes later on a 3-pointer that increased the visitors’ lead to 96-89 with 6:52 left.

Jones then drilled a 24-footer as he was being fouled. He also hit the free throw for a four-point play and a 99-91 margin with 8:36 to go, and the Kings never recovered.

Leonard went 12-for-12 at the free-throw line en route to his 13th 30-point performance of the season. He also found time for nine rebounds and a game-high seven assists.

John Collins added 22 points for the Clippers, while Lopez and Dunn finished with 15 points apiece and Jones had 13. Lopez tied Leonard for team-high rebound honors with nine and also blocked three shots.

The Kings held out star center Domantas Sabonis because of a sore back but still got plenty of production from substitute big man Maxime Raynaud, who had 12 points and five rebounds, and his backup, Dylan Cardwell, who snatched a game-high 14 rebounds to go with 14 points.

Malik Monk came off the bench to pace the Kings with 18 points, all on 3-pointers, while Nique Clifford had 16 and Devin Carter 14.

Sacramento veteran starters De’Andre Hunter, Russell Westbrook, DeMar DeRozan and Zach LaVine combined to shoot just 6-for-25 overall and 0-for-12 on 3-point attempts, the latter contributing to 27.0% team accuracy from beyond the arc. None of the four scored more than six points.
