Sports World Reacts to Cam Skattebo, Jeremiah Smith Dominating New Year's Day
Skattebo and Smith.
No, they’re not a law firm, but Cam Skattebo of Arizona State and Ohio State’s Jeremiah Smith left many college football fans reacting to their performances in the CFP quarterfinals on Wednesday.
Skattebo literally left it all on the field when ESPN reported the running back to be “vomiting profusely” on the sideline during the No. 4 seed Sun Devils’ 39-31 double overtime loss to No. 5 Texas.
He recovered enough to help Arizona State rally from a 16-point fourth-quarter deficit. He threw a 42-yard touchdown to Malik McLain to make it 24-16, then ran for a 2-yard TD and a two-point conversion to tie it at 24 before scoring on a 3-yard run in overtime in a heroic losing effort.
Skattebo finished with 30 carries for 143 yards and two touchdowns, plus the TD pass and eight receptions for 99 receiving yards.
Super70sSports wrote on X of him: “Cam Skattebo is like if Stone Cold Steve Austin and John Riggins had a baby.”
Former standout NFL receiver Terrell Owens was impressed, posting on X: “I’ve been seeing snippets of this kid @camskattebo5 the last couple of years and after today I AM A CAM SKATTEBO fan!!! He’s a dog!!! Respectfully, He’s the white version of [Marshawn Lynch] BEASTMODE!!”
NBC Sports’ Nicole Auerbach opined that the Heisman voting closed too soon: “The problem with the Heisman Trophy ceremony taking place before the start of the College Football Playoff is that there are now 11 meaningful games played after that trophy is handed out. And it’s a damn shame that Cam Skattebo wasn’t at least invited to New York City.”
While most of the nation was watching the exciting ending to the Arizona State-Texas matchup, they missed the 45-yard TD catch by Smith a minute into the 41-21 drubbing of No. 1 Oregon. He added a 43-yard score in the second quarter and had five receptions for 161 yards in the first half for the No. 8 Buckeyes.
“Why exactly did Jeremiah Smith not win National Freshman of the Year? I want an explanation.” So wrote Steve Gorten, a writer for Miami Herald Sports.
Chase Brown of the Buckeye-centric Eleven Warriors was a bit snarky: “Jeremiah Smith has five catches for 161 yards and two touchdowns in 20 minutes against Oregon, the No. 1 seed in the College Football Playoff. Is that good?”
Smith totaled seven catches for 187 yards, prompting Bleacher Report to post on X this quote from Smith leading up to the game: “I’m just laughing in my head. … If you play man (defense) Wednesday, we’re taking a shot.”
That the Buckeyes did, shredding the Ducks for a 34-0 lead in the second quarter to the delight of the King himself—Akron, Ohio, native and unabashed Ohio State supporter LeBron James: “KEEP IT GOING!!! BELT TO ASS.”
He wasn’t the only one trolling the Ducks. Columbus TV station WSYX commented on its social media site: “I have more rushing yards going to the fridge than Oregon has all game.”
Ouch. But it was true, perhaps, since the Ducks totaled minus-23 yards on 28 carries.

After rare road win, Marquette returns home to face DePaul
Jan 16, 2026; Chicago, Illinois, USA; Marquette Golden Eagles guard Nigel James Jr. (0) drives to the basket against DePaul Blue Demons forward N.J. Benson (35) during the first half at Wintrust Arena. Mandatory Credit: Kamil Krzaczynski-Imagn Images Coming off its first road win of the season, Marquette returns home to host rival DePaul in Big East Conference play Sunday afternoon in Milwaukee.
The Golden Eagles (10-18, 5-12 Big East) avoided a season with zero victories away from home, including both true road and neutral-site battles, with a 76-60 win at Georgetown on Tuesday.
Nigel James Jr. led the way once again with 20 points and six assists for Marquette, which was without starting forward Royce Parham (back tightness). Adrian Stevens added 16, Chase Ross scored 14 and Ben Gold had 10 points and 12 rebounds.
“We’re a team that relies pretty heavily on Royce’s scoring, we go to Royce quite a bit. I thought NJ and Chase did a great job with the ball, making plays, making decisions,” Marquette coach Shaka Smart said. “Adrian’s aggressiveness got better as the game went on.”
Ross exited the game in the final minutes after what appeared to be a shoulder injury. Ross should be good to go Sunday after he had his shoulder popped back into place after the game, per the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.
DePaul (15-13, 7-10) has won consecutive games away from home: 69-57 at Seton Hall on Feb. 18 and 72-71 at Creighton on Wednesday.
Brandon Maclin scored 21 points on an efficient 8-of-12 shooting from the floor to lead the way. NJ Benson added 14 points with nine rebounds while CJ Gunn scored 11.
“Both games, our guys found a way late,” DePaul coach Chris Holtmann said. “We very easily could have lost both games, but our guys found a way to win this one and B-Mac (Maclin) played a huge role in that.”
Marquette nearly picked up its first road win in the first meeting between these teams in Chicago on Jan. 16.
The Golden Eagles held a 44-36 advantage at the halftime break. The Blue Demons then almost literally flipped the score, outscoring Marquette 44-31 in the second to win 80-75.
Gunn shined for DePaul with a career-high 31 points on 7-of-13 shooting from beyond the arc. James led Marquette with 18.

Jakob Poeltl totaled 18 points and 10 rebounds and Scottie Barnes scored 18 for the Raptors, who shot a sizzling 71.4% in the second half while scoring 73 points. Toronto shot 60% from the field for the game.
Will Riley’s 19 points led Washington, followed by Bilal Coulibaly and Keyonte George’s 14 points apiece. Tristan Vukcevic added 13, while Carlton Carrington and Justin Champagnie finished with 12 apiece. The Wizards made 16 of their 34 3-point attempts, but dropped their fourth straight, shooting 47.9% overall.
After trailing by 13 in the first half, Toronto grabbed its first lead since the opening minutes, as Barrett’s layup gave the Raptors a 75-74 advantage with 7:53 left in the third.
Ingram’s 3-pointer extended the lead to six at the 4:23 mark.
Poeltl capped the quarter’s scoring with a layup to give the Raptors a 98-92 lead entering the fourth.
Toronto took its first double-digit lead on baskets by Barnes and Quickley to open the final quarter. The lead grew to 13 on Barrett’s 3-pointer.
Jamal Shead sealed the convincing victory with a triple at the 3:40 mark, putting Toronto ahead 129-116.
Washington built a 33-20 lead as Anthony Gill’s hook shot stamped a 7-0 run with 1:40 left in the first quarter. Ja’Kobe Walter’s 3-pointer cut the Raptors’ deficit to eight entering the second quarter.
The Wizards connected on their ninth 3-pointer less than two minutes into the second quarter as Jamir Watkins’ trey extended the lead to 41-29.
Toronto battled back as Sandro Mamukelashvili’s three-point play cut the deficit to 54-50, before George’s 3-pointer and Gill’s layup made it a nine-point cushion with 3:09 left before halftime.
Coulibaly’s mid-range jumper gave Washington a 64-61 lead at the break. Ingram led all scorers with 13, while Coulibaly scored 11 for the Wizards.

Aiden Hezarkhani, Ariath Piol score to lead Real Salt Lake past Sounders
Feb 28, 2026; Sandy, Utah, USA; Real Salt Lake forward Aiden Hezarkhani (39) controls the ball in the first half against the Seattle Sounders at America First Field. Mandatory Credit: Aaron Baker-Imagn Images Young players Aiden Hezarkhani and Ariath Piol scored and veteran goalkeeper Rafael Cabral made eight saves, as Real Salt Lake won its home opener 2-1 over the Seattle Sounders on Saturday night in Sandy, Utah.
Cabral’s last save was perhaps his biggest, as he stopped Snyder Brunell’s volley from about 8 yards out in the ninth of ten minutes of second-half stoppage time.
Real Salt Lake improved to 14-1-4 all-time at home against Seattle, with the lone loss coming in 2011.
Cristian Roldan scored for the Sounders (1-1-0, 3 points) in the opener of a five-game trip.
After a couple of close misses by the Sounders in the opening minutes, RSL (1-1-0, 3 points) opened the scoring in the 23rd.
Zavier Gozo dribbled between three Seattle defenders then attempted a pass to the top of the 18-yard box. That was knocked away by Hassani Dotson, but the ball fell to Luca Moisa, who sent a pass toward the top left of the penalty area to Juan Manuel Sanabria, making his MLS debut. Sanabria sent a cross back across to Hezarkhani on the right wing and his left-footed half-volley rocketed into the near upper corner of the net, leaving leaping goalkeeper Andrew Thomas no chance.
RSL doubled its advantage in the 47th minute as Philip Quinton sent a long ball down the right wing for Gozo. He dribbled into the penalty area before sending a low pass to Piol for a tap-in from 5 yards out.
The Sounders pulled within 2-1 in the 62nd minute as Rusnak’s corner kick from the left wing was sent to the near post, where Roldan put a glancing header into the far side of the net.
It appeared Seattle tied the score in the 77th minute when substitute Danny Musovski volleyed home a cross from Paul Rothrock, but it was ruled Rothrock was offside when he accepted a pass.
Cabral made a leaping save to punch a header from Yeimar Gomez Andrade off the goal line in the 8th minute following a Seattle free kick from the left wing.
In the 14th, Cabral leaped to tip a 35-yard free kick by Rusnak slotted for the upper left corner of the net out of bounds. Cabral crashed into the post and needed medical attention but was able to continue.
And in the 20th, Cabral came off his line to get a hand on a Rusnak header on a broken play after a deflected cross.
Cabral again thwarted Rusnak, a former RSL standout, in the 61st minute, tipping a free kick over the crossbar.
