Aubrey Plaza Doesn't Hold Back About Controversial Puerto Rico Joke

If you’ve been keeping up with the news surrounding the chaotic 2024 presidential election, you’re likely already aware of the controversial remarks made at Donald Trump’s recent Madison Square Garden rally. One such viral remark, which came from roast comedian Tony Hinchcliffe, saw the orator unfavorably comparing the island of Puerto Rico to a “floating island of garbage.” According to a write-up in The Hollywood Reporter, Megalopolis actress Aubrey Plaza has come forth to call Hinchcliffe out for his Puerto Rico joke, plainly stating “Tony Hinchcliffe, go f*** yourself.”

More specifically, Aubrey Plaza was speaking on behalf of her deceased grandmother, who, like most of Plaza’s family, was born and raised in Puerto Rico. Plaza maligned Hinchcliffe’s tasteless joke as racist and disgusting, before articulating that her grandmother, if alive today, would swiftly tell the comedian “go f*** yourself.” Never one to shy away from controversy, Plaza concluded her remarks by insisting that the media could feel free to quote her statements.

While Aubrey Plaza had arguably the funniest and most unfiltered response to Tony Hinchcliffe, other Puerto Rican stars such as Bad Bunny, Ricky Martin, and Jennifer Lopez have also weighed in. Many American voters have made their feelings on the comedian’s comments known by simply sharing a video of Kamala Harris on the campaign trail, wherein the sitting Vice President praises the U.S. territory and outlines a plan to share aid and supplies to the island.

Hinchcliffe has been unilaterally shunned by voters across the entire political spectrum, as even Trump campaign staffers have attempted to distance themselves from his remarks at the rally. His comments not only attacked Puerto Rico, but other Latinos seeking asylum from nations South of the American border, as well as Jewish citizens and black Americans.

Much like Aubrey Plaza, The View‘s Sunny Hostin weighed in on the so-called “comedy” speech, harshly explaining on the air “Puerto Rico is trash? We are Americans, Donald Trump, Americans. And we know how to take the trash out, Donald Trump. Trash that has been collecting since 2016, and that’s you Donald Trump.”

The joke seems to have ignited a powder keg of activity from voters across the nation, just days before the 2024 election is set to finally conclude. The entire affair has been widely regarded as one of the most harshly partisan election cycles in recent history, with numerous celebrities, including Dave Bautista, Taylor Swift, and Zachary Levi lending their support to their preferred candidate in loud and expressive fashion.

Though Aubrey Plaza already endorsed Kamala Harris for president back in September, it seems clear that the Trump campaign has not done anything to change her mind by platforming the joke about Puerto Rico.

Even before the Madison Square Garden rally, Donald Trump’s campaign has been condemned for its use of overtly harsh and dehumanizing language regarding Latino communities especially. The former president and 34-time convicted felon previously made comments where he referred to migrants seeking asylum as “animals,” “vermin,” and “psychopaths,” while claiming that the recent influx of Mexican and South American immigrants is “poisoning the blood” of Americans. Aubrey Plaza, who has made it a point to highlight her background in Puerto Rico, is one of many who simply would not stand for such comments, from Trump, nor his rally guests.

Best Mothers Day gifts: Show mom some love

Mother figures are the backbone of the world. Yours may be your biological mother, or maybe she’s your mother-in-law, your best friend’s mom, or simply someone whose motherly instinct has helped you through hard times.

Moms teach you the adulting necessities, give advice even if the problem is your fault, and above all, they put up with your shit and (almost) never complain.

The game plan here isn’t just to snag the last bouquet at CVS just so you’re not the kid who forgot Mother’s Day (but definitely also get flowers). And you don’t even need to spend a lot of money. (Peep our list of Mother’s Day gifts that cost less than $50. Want even more cheap gift ideas?

Skip the generic mugs and show your appreciation with a gift picked just for her: Whether it’s something to make a part of her life easier, something she’s mentioned wanting in passing, or simply something to make her feel like a damn queen, you can’t put a price on everything she’s done for you, but heartfelt gifts certainly help.

After all, they say “No matter how hard you try, you always end up like your mother.” But is that even a bad thing?
