After squandering top seed, Galaxy open playoffs vs. Rapids

But the Rapids aren’t about to lay down despite a dismal stretch to end the regular season.
Seventh-seeded Colorado looks to improve on its recent play while the second-seeded Galaxy aim to continue their home dominance. Something has to give when the clubs play Saturday night in the opener of a best-of-three Western Conference first-round series at Carson, Calif.
The Galaxy (19-8-7, 64 points) were 13-0-3 in matches played at their home stadium during the regular season, including victories in their past 11 matches in Carson. They outscored opponents 31-14 during the winning streak.
The Galaxy did lose a 2-1 decision in that stretch to rival Los Angeles FC on July 4 as the home team at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, Calif.
“When the fans bring energy into the stadium, and our team is competing and creating goal-scoring chances, it feeds back into the energy of the match,” Los Angeles coach Greg Vanney said. “It’s good for all of us.”
Colorado was just 5-10-2 on the road, including a 3-2 setback at Austin FC to close the regular season.
Worse, the Rapids (15-14-5, 50 points) have limped into the playoffs by losing four straight matches and five of their past six.
But Colorado is taking solace that it was competitive against the Galaxy in the regular season. Los Angeles posted a 3-2 home win over the Rapids on July 17 and a 3-1 road victory on Oct. 2. Galaxy star Riqui Puig had three goals in the two contests.
“They’re a team that we know exactly what makes them good,” said Rapids coach Chris Armas, who is one of three finalists for MLS Coach of the Year honors. “Those previous reps give us real information and insight. We put the Galaxy into two really difficult games.”
Colorado defender Keegan Rosenberry said his side isn’t wary of opening the playoffs against a powerhouse squad.
“We’re excited for the challenge,” Rosenberry said. “People might talk about drawing maybe the best team all year in the Galaxy but you’re going to have to beat good teams along the way in this format. Why not first when you’re fresh going into it?”
Los Angeles also enters the playoffs after a loss as it fell 2-1 to the host Houston Dynamo in its finale. The heartbreaking defeat, on a Dynamo goal in stoppage time, prevented the Galaxy from wrapping up the top spot in the Western Conference.
Gabriel Pec scored the LA goal on a penalty kick and has tallied goals in five consecutive MLS matches and six of the past seven. He leads the Galaxy with 16 goals.
Vanney was less than thrilled with his club’s lack of fire during the loss to Houston.
“We should have a healthy level of fear that we can be out of the playoffs in a hurry,” said Vanney, “but we’ve got to use that motivation.”

Davis Alexander, Alouettes look to extend East cushion vs. Tiger-Cats

When Montreal hosts the Hamilton Tiger-Cats on Sunday night, it has a chance to take a three-game lead and earn the tiebreaker with a victory.
Most of that is because Alexander has – to this point – stayed off the injured list after playing just eight games last year due to a hamstring injury. Alexander has rolled up huge numbers for the Als (5-1), passing for 2,181 yards and 11 touchdowns while setting a new CFL record by throwing 336 straight passes without an interception.
Head coach Jason Maas said he and Alexander came to an understanding that he had to curb his scrambling style to be of maximum use to the club.
“He’s very smart about how he plays and what he decides to do,” Maas said. “There’s a reason he has played (six) straight games. These things, after you’ve had one, they can reoccur and it takes a lot of time to get over them.”
While Montreal is soaring with its quarterback at 100 percent, Hamilton (3-3) got back into the win column last week when its third starting quarterback in three weeks gave the offense a big lift in a 24-23 win over Toronto.
Tre Ford hit on 21 of 27 passes for 218 yards and a touchdown while rushing for 109 yards on 10 attempts. The Tiger-Cats struggled mightily on offense in back-to-back losses to Winnipeg and Saskatchewan, largely because star QB Bo Levi Mitchell broke his ankle in the third quarter against Winnipeg.
“Using my legs is going to be an asset for my team,” said Ford, a former starter in Edmonton before being benched last year for Cody Fajardo. “Having legs definitely helps … being able to extend plays, run around and get first downs.”
It was really helpful last week when tackles Trevor Reid and Quinton Barrow left with injuries, forcing rookie tight end Max Mang into emergency duty as a guard.

Carson Hocevar delights fans with pole-winning run for Brickyard 400

Hocevar knew at that moment that Saturday’s time trials at the historic 2.5-mile oval would not be a repeat of Michigan in June, when Hamlin, as the final qualifier, knocked Hocevar off the provisional pole at the 23-year-old’s home track.
In fact, after earning his second Busch Light Pole Award of the season and the third of his career, Hocevar will lead the field to green in Sunday’s Brickyard 400 (2 p.m. ET on TNT, IMS Radio Network and SiriusXM NASCAR Radio).
“I got out of the car, and they were cheering,” Hocevar said of the crowd in the grandstands near the Yard of Bricks start/finish line. “I don’t know if they were cheering for me or because I beat Denny (who qualified fifth at 185.835 mph).
“Denny stole one from me at Michigan. That’s my home track, but this is my favorite track. I love Indy.”
With a pole-winning lap at 186.598 mph in the No. 77 Chevrolet, Hocevar edged Suarez (186.382 mph) for the top starting spot by 0.056 seconds. The session was a triumph for Spire Motorsports and owner Jeff Dickerson, an Indianapolis native.
With Michael McDowell qualifying sixth at 185.762 mph, Spire put all three of its cars within the first three rows of the grid.
“It felt really good,” Hocevar said of his blistering lap. “Michael McDowell went out early and gave me the confidence that the car was going to be able stick with him putting up a good lap.
“I felt really comfortable. I love this place. … You race differently if you’re comfortable and confident here. I’ve been confident since the first lap I’ve been here.”
Toyota driver Tyler Reddick posted the third fastest lap at 186.077 mph and will start next to Joe Gibbs Racing’s Ty Gibbs (185.966 mph). Naval Base Coronado winner Corey Heim claimed the seventh starting spot, followed by Alex Bowman, AJ Allmendinger and Kyle Larson.
The top 10 featured six Chevrolets and four Toyotas. Ryan Blaney, competing against Todd Gilliland for the $1-million In-Season Challenge prize, drove the fastest Ford (185.197 mph) to a 13th-place starting spot. Gilliland qualified 36th at 182.460 mph.
Blaney will make his 400th career Cup Series start on Sunday.
Defending race winner Bubba Wallace (183.861 mph) earned the 29th grid position.
Suarez was ahead of Hocevar’s pace early in his lap but lost time through the final two corners.
“I felt like I left a little bit out there,” Suarez said. “A little mistake in corner 3, but I’m very proud of my team.”

Jackson Koivun (61) leads 3M Open by 3 entering final round

Koivun, in his just third tournament as a professional, holds a three-shot lead on Ben Kohles and Argentina’s Emiliano Grillo going to Sunday’s final round at TPC Twin Cities.
Koivun, who announced last month that he would forgo his senior collegiate season at Auburn to turn pro, finished on a tear with two eagles on the backside that allowed him to play the final 10 holes in 9-under. That contributed to a tournament-record 28 on the backside, rolling in a 14-foot eagle putt on the last hole.
Koivun’s bogey-free round included an eagle 3 on No. 12.
Grillo and Kohles also were without bogeys on the way to posting 65s. Grillo eagled No. 18 shortly after Koivun accomplished that. Kohles, the first-round leader, had three birdies on both sides.
Michael Brennan (63) and Chandler Phillips (66) are tied for fourth place at 16 under.
Michael Kim, fresh off Friday’s 59, was unable to maintain the momentum, shooting 70 and joining Denny McCarthy (64) and Billy Horschel (65) at 15 under. Kim had only one birdie until No. 16 on Saturday.
World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler had his best round of the tournament with 64 to move to 14 under, holding a share of first place when he left the final green. Competing in the tournament for the first time, he posted an 8 under score on the backside, highlighted by an eagle with a chip from the greenside rough on the par-4 16th.
Davis Thompson and Ireland’s Seamus Power were early finishers with 63s, also among those at 14 under before other golfers got rolling. Brian Harman (66) is at 14 under as well.
Defending champion Kurt Kitayama shot 66 to move to 10 under.
